Diagnosing the System for Systems Research: Recognising and Realising a Field in Itself and for Itself

Stafford Beer gave the world an instrument for diagnosing viability. A hundred years on, the field that carries his name has rarely turned that instrument on itself. The 2026 agenda of the International Federation for Systems Research reads the cyber-systemic field as vibrant and dispersed: ten clusters of inquiry, wide application, thin synthesis, and a scarcity of the very self-reflection the field so readily prescribes to others. A success paradox running into a reflexivity gap. Read cybernetically, the diagnosis becomes uncomfortably familiar. A proliferating System One that seldom cross-pollinates. A System Four holding no outside-and-then. A System Five never articulated, so that identity is inherited rather than chosen. And the question that will not let go: where are the algedonic signals of the field, and to whom do they speak? Any answer already presumes a we. This keynote offers an invitation to co-create the conditions for a joint learning journey, and to ground collective agency in the field's sense of we.
