Biography
Jose S. Cabral Filho is an architect and a semi-retired professor at the School of Architecture at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil). His research focuses on the liberating potential of technology, seeking a far-reaching adoption of play in digital design, using games as a framework for the coexistence of determinism and non-determinism. His main interests include the philosophy of Vilém Flusser, Second-Order Cybernetics, as well as architectural-performance and electronic music.

Architecture for Freedom: Syntegrity as an Educational Practice
Purpose: Stafford Beer taught us that a structure, by setting its own limits and constraints, can open rather than close possibilities. Architectural education, we think, should mirror a cybernetic architecture: a structured framework that, by setting limits and constraints, creates space for freedom, a freedom that emerges through dialogue with the unknown, through the encounter with the other. Following Beer's Designing Freedom, we call this an architecture for freedom. Methods: We built a design course inspired by Beer's Team Syntegrity, letting it take several shapes across a few years. First, only among students, working through readings in rotating roles of advocate, critic and observer, so a shared understanding could grow without us dictating it. Then the syntegrations opened outward, putting students in dialogue with a village theatre group, inside that same non-hierarchical structure. Later, we stepped back, and the students designed and ran their own syntegration involving the community. Findings: In this process with the students, the structure did the teaching more than we did. Students moved from solving problems previously framed to designing the very process of designing, in Chris Jones's sense, building up a confidence to approach others they did not yet know, just as the structure had once engaged them. Implications: This is what an architecture for freedom looks like in a classroom: cybernetics mirroring the long-standing tradition of architecture, offering a framework that encompasses the symbolic, the bodily, the intellectual and the concrete, and like Beer's icosahedron, holds just enough space for people to find their own way through it.
