Biography

Cristina Cervino is a Ph.D. student at the Department of Economics, Management, and Institutions (DEMI), University of Naples “Federico II,” Italy. She currently serves as the Secretary of ASVSA (Associazione per la Ricerca sui Sistemi Vitali) and is also a member of WOSC (World Organization of Systems and Cybernetics). She has participated in several international conferences in the fields of knowledge management, sustainability reporting and systems thinking, contributing as a peer reviewer. Her academic identity is grounded in the Viable Systems Approach.

Taming the Digital Beast: Variety Engineering and the Quest for Techno-Eustress

As societies around the world grapple with increasing complexity, rapid algorithmic changes, and constant digital connectivity, the challenges of humans’ interactions with machines have become a significant crisis. While traditional cybernetics focuses on technological systems, the human element is often left to cope with systemic stress and cognitive overload. To transform this societal ‘torment’ into a promising future, this study introduces the concept of ‘techno-eustress’, a positive form of stress that helps to build resilience. Using Systems Thinking and CyberSystemic lenses, the ‘T-shaped’ professional profile is applied as a framework for fostering diversity. While having deep vertical expertise (T-Stem) can make individuals susceptible to rigid techno-distress, it is suggested that developing horizontal systemic skills (T-Top) offers the necessary diversity to achieve a balanced state of techno-eustress. Methods: The study integrates two complementary measurement frameworks. Specifically, the level of techno-eustress is assessed through the Techno-Eustress scale derived from existing literature, while the configuration of the T-shaped profile is quantified using the MyT-Me platform. Results: Early findings suggest that navigating complex digital landscapes requires more than just technical know-how; it’s about understanding the entire system. The data shows that having a robust T-Top setup is linked to a greater ability to transform the technological pressures of the environment into beneficial eustress rather than harmful stress. Implications: By identifying and measuring the cyber-systemic skills required for effective human-machine collaboration, the provided framework builds a practical guide to creating resilient, human-centred and socially responsible digital environments.
