Gary Smith
Biography
Gary Smith is a Senior Expert in systems engineering and architecture within the aerospace, defence and security sector, and a Past-President of the International Society for the Systems Sciences. He is also Section Editor for Foundations of Systems Engineering in the Systems Engineering Body of Knowledge (SEBoK). His professional practice spans systems engineering, enterprise and mission architecture, organisational transformation, and integrated business management systems. His interests include systems science, methodological pluralism, organisational cybernetics, system dynamics, Soft Systems Methodology, and the relationship between systems thinking and systems engineering. Gary’s research explores meta-frameworks for organising transversal knowledge about systems, relationships among form, function and fit, and systemic coherence in human-AI collaboration. He is a guest editor for work bringing systems thinking and systems biology into closer dialogue. He contributes regularly to international systems communities, conferences and collaborative research initiatives, seeking to connect foundational systems theory with practical challenges in organisations, engineering, health and society.
